| On October 4, Marymount Manhattan College played host to the widely read Dr. Neil Postman. The respected scholar was the first speaker in the inaugural Jack and Lewis Rudin Visiting Scholarship Program. Dr. Postman spoke about his latest endeavor: "Building a Bridge to the 18th Century." Dr. Postman is one of the most widely respected scholars in the field of communications. He is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Media Ecology at New York University where he has taught for the past 40 years. A great majority of MMC's own communications professors have studied under him. Postman's lecture focused on what we can do to quell our fears and angst about the 21st century. Instead of looking to the future, Postman suggested looking to the past to guide us. He suggested the 18th century as the ideal century for this. Postman listed several reasons for his selection of this time period mainly focusing on "The Enlightenment." In Postman's opinion, this period was the ideal in the technological advances, as there were many during the 18th century, did not represent human progress. Rather, it was the "philosophs," as he called them, and the great educators that constituted progress for the people. The lecture was a riveting account for many of the Communication Arts students who are very familiar with the writings of Dr. Postman. Many students in the department are hoping that this first visit will be the first of many by the professor |
