ASCG 151, Introduction to Computer Graphics, Fall 2003
  "The goal is to teach the students many of the basic concepts necessary for successful use of the computer as a graphic tool, including eye-hand coordination, paint software fundamentals, basic microcomputer operation, the care and feeding of disk systems, and familiarity with simple computer operating system commands. The general computer graphics marketplace is also discussed. The course is a prerequisite for all computer graphic courses."
     

Assignment
Intro to photographic techniques. Taking a scan of a flat object, students manipulate various principles of design, such overlapping, negative and positive space, contrast of size, framal reference to illustrate the words, bold, congested, increase, order, playful and tension. By taking multiple images of the same object and combining them in ways that explore the above principles, students practice beginning photoshop techniques in addition to design thinking.

Assignment
Exploratory typography. Using an object oriented program, students are directed to re-design an existing flyer. Initial work in Adobe Illustrator, focusing on several key aspects.

Assignment
The Wind.
Students are presented with a simple children's verse. Using a very limited pallette of options in Illustrator, and a pre-disposed set of symbols, they are instructed to graphically portray the poem in six frames. This assignment explores pictorial elements and principles while using simple graphic objects in a narrow software environment.

Assignment
Using a master photograph as a template, students are directed to draw layers with appropriate color to simulate tonal changes in the face tones. Assignment emphasizes a painterly approach to imagemaking, while learning how to manipulate layered artwork.

Assignment
An exploration of photographic truth. Taking several images, one of which is of themselves, and all of which have similar lighting and gesture, students are instructed to manipulate the master image of themselves with pieces of the other images, thereby exploring how seamlessly they can re-creat themselves, i.e. create a believable fiction.

  Assignment 4
In a page layout program, students are directed to research and design a 24 page book of type history and style, exploring six typographic catagories. Assignment emphasizes research and the use of object oriented and bitmap programs in the context of a page layout assignment.
